The Centuries-Old Tradition

For centuries, Bulgaria has been the country producing world's highest quality rose oil. The first rose plantations appeared around the town of Kazanlak in 16th century. The climatic and soil conditions of the area proved to be more favorable than any other geographic region in the world. Gradually the number of rose plantations grew occupying a large area in central Bulgaria, known as the Valley of Roses. For more than 400 years, the Bulgarian Rose Valley has been considered the world center for rose oil production. Surrounded by two majestic mountains, the Balkan Mountain and Sredna Gora, the Valley of Roses is considered to have the best soil structure, air humidity, cloudiness and precipitation for obtaining the finest and most sought-after rose oil in the world.

Rose Harvesting

Picking roses is a very hard and labor consuming process, done solely by hand. The way you pick a rosebud properly is using your thumb, index and middle fingers. Hold the rosebud and break it by pressing it upwards with your thumb. The rose picking begins at 4 o’clock in the morning and usually ends at 10 AM because the rose petals picked in the afternoon have 50% less rose oil concentrate in them. The rose pickers pick the rose petals in special, willow branch baskets as the willow does not soak the dew of the rose petals. Afterwards, the rose petals are put in big baskets made of willow branches again and are transported to the rose processing plant.

Rose Distillery

After the workers have finished picking the roses for the day, the fresh blossoms are taken to the distillery where the distillation process immediately takes place. The rose blossoms are placed in a special distillation still. Then a stream of low-pressure steam is discharged through the fresh blossoms to release the essential oil into the vapor. The aromatic vapor is then condensed by cooling the coil. The third stage of the process is the oil separation, where the essential oil is easily separated from the water because of the difference in density.

Art of Distillation

Roses are very delicate flowers and it is very difficult but important to preserve all their valuable therapeutic properties. Distillation process is complex and expensive to perform, however it ensures higher quality, therapeutic grade rose oil. To make just 1 milligram of pure rose essential oil we need 50.000 individual petals (around 1500 rose flowers) which is the equivalent of around 3.5 kilograms (7-8 pounds) of rose petals.
